FAQ - Expert Answers
Q. Can I put vinyl siding over T111 siding?
A. Yes. You can put vinyl siding over T111, however you need to make sure that the structure is protected by a moisture barrier system before the vinyl siding is installed. If the structure is not protected, you risk damage to the structure of your home through water infiltration.
Q. I got estimates for window & door replacements. One was $14,000, and another was $25,000. Is there any reason why I should worry about going with the low bid?
A. You need to make sure that you are comparing apples to apples. Does the low bidder carry all of the required General Liability and Worker's Compensation insurances? How long has each company been in business. Can they provide references? In the long run the low bidder might be just that - the low bid, which means that you might just get what you pay for.
Q. Will window film protect my home during a storm?
A. Film that is considered "hurricane film" may prevent your window from breaking, but it won't keep your window in place. Films may strengthen the properties of the glass, but if the frame is not secured, your entire window could blow in during a storm. The open hole left in place of where your windows was will cause the pressure inside your home to change, which could result in roof damage - to the extent of portions of your roof actually blowing up and off of the structure.
Q. What is a hurricane impact window?
A. Hurricane Impact windows are windows that have been engineered, tested, and manufactured to withstand a hurricane. They also have installation specifications that must be met in order for the window to withstand impact. You need to make sure that the company that you hire has the proper training to install the “hurricane” / impact-resistant windows and doors correctly.
Q. Will Impact Windows & Doors Improve Energy Efficiency?
A. Impact windows and doors are built of heavy-duty aluminum frame with double glazing panes which make the windows much more energy efficient. The laminated glass inherently reduces the amount of heat gain and UV rays that the interior of your home is exposed to.
They also are available with Low-E and insulating glass. Both options will further reduce heat gain in your home and will increase significantly the fading of furnishings and carpets.
Q. Can I get a discount on my insurance premium you install Impact Windows?
A. If all of the house openings are protected with impact-resistant windows or doors, policyholders can obtain up to 45% premium discounts. In order to apply for the discount, homeowners need to call a home inspection company so they can perform a wind certification inspection. Check with your insurance carrier to obtain more information on the process.
Q. How much will it cost to remodel my kitchen or bathroom?
A. The price for a new kitchen or bathroom will be affected by (1) where you buy it (2) what features it includes and (3) the brands/models you select.
